July 26: The worth of Sobriety

Hello, ladies. Welcome to today’s meeting. I’d also like to welcome our newcomers and congratulate anyone celebrating a sobriety birthday this month. When I read the AA reflection for July 26, the topic was the worth of sobriety and the idea that every AA group ought to be fully self-supporting. My first thought was that I should choose another topic because no one would want to talk about this. But after reading and reflecting more, I began thinking about the true worth of my sobriety.

The Value of My Sobriety

My sobriety is priceless. Without AA and recovery, I would have no real life, no blueprint to follow, and no one to walk the road of recovery with me.

What “Worth” Means in Recovery

From the reading, I understand that the worth of sobriety is built through the simple actions that keep recovery alive:

  • going to meetings,
  • doing the daily readings,
  • reaching out to others,
  • being there for those who need support, and
  • helping keep the doors of AA open.

Voluntary Contributions

Part of keeping AA self-supporting is making a financial contribution when we are able. At the same time, I agree with Dr. Bob and Bill W., who emphasized that any contribution should be voluntary and based on what each person can afford.

Please share your thoughts about the Worthy of your soberity and/or whatever is on your heart.
